#101 The right tension

Hello, friends.

Happy Sunday, everyone.

What I’m Learning/Doing

We have new people starting or open positions across all our companies right now. I find myself thinking a lot about the type of people we’re bringing on. Each business has its own culture and mix of skills required to “do the job”.

No matter the role or fit, the common thread across all of Calm’s companies are the following attributes.

  • Confident and humble
  • Self-starting and team-oriented
  • Encouraging and candid
  • Exceptionably prepared and flexible
  • Focused and approachable

If you read through these, they’re somewhat oppositions of each other. Tensions if you will.

But it’s that pull between the two attributes that bring the right people. Not too hot. Not too cold. Just right.

Changelog

Honestly (honestly.co): Continuing to improve our ability to deliver great marketing and creative fast. We have a big focus this quarter on helping e-commerce companies.

LOFT (poweredbyloft.com): Very excited about bringing on a new team member to help grow our partner program. In addition, we’re focused this quarter on local governments and Shopify stores.

CrewPay (paywithcrew.com): We’re making good progress on CrewPay’s shift to a contractor-first model. The next few weeks are important ones for planning our approach to leadership, fundraising and growth. Last week, contractor growth was 3% over the previous.

Pttrns (pttrns.com): Rebooted our email newsletter last week. It’s the first one we’ve sent in a long time. We’ve had 218 new users join in the last 2 weeks.

Augusto (augusto.digital): Hired the first dedicated business development person at Augusto a few weeks ago. The results have been pretty incredible so far.

Until next time.
